Tile vs. Other Roofing Material

Concrete Tile vs. Metal Roofing

Concrete tile roofing has the longest life-cycle of any roofing product.  Metal roofing has an average lifespan of 40-50 years, but concrete tiles typically outlast the very structures they span.

Concrete tile roofs are virtually maintenance free, requiring only an occasional inspection.  Owners must maintain the paint and sealants of metal roofs.

Concrete roof tiles can be manufactured in a wide assortment of colors.  Metal roofing color choices are limited.

Concrete Tile vs. Asphalt Shingle

The life expectancy of concrete roof tiles is 55 years longer than asphalt shingles .  When comparing the cost per year of these two roofing materials, asphalt shingles cost nearly three times more per year than a concrete tile roof.  Reroofing every 20 years adds tremendous waste volume to our landfills.

Concrete roof tiles create a passageway between the roof deck and the actual roofing material, allowing hot air to be exhausted at the ridge.  Asphalt shingles, on the other hand, trap heat in.  This significantly decreases the energy efficiency of the building below.

Entegra`s concrete roof tiles are made of renewable, recyclable materials:  sand, cement, water, organic pigments and water-based sealers.  Asphalt shingles are petroleum based.

Additionally, concrete roof tiles are Class A fire rated, the highest fire rating available.

Concrete Tile vs. Clay Tile

Clay tile was used in nearly all of the early tile roofing throughout the world. Further, clay roof tiles were used for the installation of almost all of tile roofs in the United States until 40 years ago. However, manufacturing improvements and new technology led to the development of concrete roof tiles. Quickly, concrete roof tile climbed its way to the top, where it now dominates the market. Why has concrete tile become more popular than clay tile?

In a nutshell: Concrete roof tile costs roughly half as much as clay roof tile, uses an easier installation process and can be manufactured in any color.
