In 1844, the first cement-based tiles were made at the Kroher cement factory in Bavaria. The early tiles received pigmented coatings applied to the surface to give them color, but efflorescence and poor color durability quickly ruined the appearance. Consequently, uncoated tiles of basic cement became quite popular.
Throughout the years, advancements in the processes used to create concrete roof tiles have created tiles with more of an aesthetic appeal. The substantial breakthrough occured in 1919 when the first extruded tile were manufactured in the United Kingdom. Shortly after, this process was commercialized in South Africa, Austrailia and the rest of Europe, making it possible to mass-produce concrete tile instead of basically hand-making each piece. It became possible to produce as many as 20 million tiles each year.
